What is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist (DDS or DMD) who has had additional specialty training to become an expert in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) diseases, placement and maintenance of dental implants, and the diagnosis and treatment of problems associated with the bone and soft tissues of the mouth, that affect your smile and the way you look.

An internationally recognized leader in periodontology and repeatedly been named a top dentist in Kansas City, Dr. Nancy L. Newhouse loves seeing her patients smile, knowing she’s helping them with both periodontal and general systemic health.

Dr. Newhouse is a full-time periodontal specialist – an ADA recognized dental specialty – in private practice and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontics. Dr. Newhouse is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and, most notably served as the 2012 – 2013 President of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). Dr. Newhouse undergoes the rigorous continuing certification process every six years to ensure that she remains on the forefront of periodontology.

Drawing on her commitment to best practices, she has provided caring attention and expertise to her patients since opening her first office in Independence, Missouri in 1985 and has placed and maintained dental implants since 1988. She is licensed to practice periodontics in both Missouri and Kansas.

A native of Independence, Missouri, Dr. Newhouse received her D.D.S. from the University of Missouri-kansas City School of Dentistry, and her Certificate and M.S. in Periodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio.

In her free time, she works to enhance the entire profession of periodontics, including serving as the President of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Board of Trustees and multiple other leadership roles at the AAP and the Midwest Society of Periodontology, the Missouri Society of Periodontists, the Missouri Specialty Board of Periodontics and the Eastern Jackson County Dental Health Group.

Special Training. Special Certification.

To become a periodontist, a dentist must receive three years of additional specialized training in an accredited periodontal residency program. And, in the State of Missouri, the specialist must also be certified by the American Board of Periodontology and, in the State of Kansas, must pass a special licensing examination.

Our Staff

The staff of Newhouse Periodontics averages of 10-20 years of dental experience. They are highly trained professionals certified in all phases of good patient care whether it be patient comfort, sterilization, sedation, x-rays, CPR and other emergency procedures, expanded assisting functions, and OSHA requirements. They are trained and work hard to make sure each of our patients can complete their necessary treatment in a safe, friendly, comfortable, and efficient environment. They are a great team!

Our office was designed for patient comfort and to provide the technology and facilities necessary to provide the best personalized care. From the reception room chairs and art to each treatment room, Dr. Newhouse took great interest in providing a warm, welcoming, and comfortable environment.
